Released more than an year after their 1st album, Sisyphus while keeping the Soul R&B edge, is much more Funky, and Latin influences are also strong – Santana’s producer Fred Catero surely isn’t strange to that; there were a couple of changes in the line-up, like new drummer Sandy McKee who has a more fluid style – and also contributes with percussions – and the horn section, which albeit smaller now includes trombone (immediately standing out on the opening Latin Funky instrumental “Shop Talk” or later on the arrangements of “Understanding”); sax player Danny Hull now also picks up the flute (shortly) adding a new colour e.g. on “Funky on my Back” ; Chepito Areas from Santana adds percussion on the 1st two tracks giving them his special Latin touch; the new drummer also sings, thus establishing a male contrast to Lydia Pense (here slightly more restrained vocals); Matute adds to the acoustic feel playing more piano and also tries with the electric piano on “Understanding”;
Another novelty is the fact that except for one track ( the soulful Isaac Hayes penned “Your good Thing” with jazzy piano playing, washes of organ, lush horn charts and the Pointer Sisters giving a hand (a throat) on backing vocals), everything is band composed which often allows the jam vibe to come out;
There’s even a guitar heavy track, the percussions drenched, infectious up tempo FunkyRock, male sung “I Can’t Stay” .
